Intern Chronicles: What is the cloud? Where is the cloud?

Everyone is hearing about the cloud, but what does it actually mean?

Well, I’ve got news for you: If you use the Internet, you are using the cloud! The cloud is simply a network of servers. These banks of powerful computers are located all over the country in data centers. All you need is an Internet connection and a web browser and voila, you are using the cloud!

Some server networks are designed for storage and some are designed for running applications. An application that runs in the cloud is called a web application and does not need to be installed in your computer. (For example, Microsoft Office 365 is cloud based.) You are using the cloud when you log onto Google, Facebook, Gmail, and other services through the internet.

At Network People we offer a type of cloud service called “Datto” which provides cloud storage. In other words, your data is stored on servers at other geographical locations instead of just at your facility. We also offer backup, disaster recovery and business continuity solutions using the cloud.

So the cloud is really not so mysterious after all!
